The monuments for games symbolize both the radiance of Roman cultural and imperial power. Their place was essential to the life of cities, as important as the forum or thermal baths. Both the urban and country populations could come together in these structures where entertaining spectacles, but also religious events were held. Roman expansion was the driving force for the construction of numerous theaters and amphitheaters throughout the Mediterranean.
The study of these monuments in Roman occupied Mauritania contributes to a better understanding of the integration of these provinces within the Empire. This work presents a new look at the cuurent state of inquiry, supported by documentation that is presented for the first time in a systematic and complete manner. It brings a new viewpoint concerning the romanization of Mauritania, as well as the municipal, social, religious and economical importance of the games, and includes their impact on daily life and the culture of the populations.
